Firm tannins are holding everything in place right now. There’s a tiny dip through the mid-palate before the fruit rushes back in to catch you. Redcurrant and cassis bud notes suggest that we aren’t in over-ripe territory here, but it feels confident enough. It demonstrates how second wines can struggle in certain vintages, such as 2012, as they are sacrificed to maintain the quality of the grand vin – and this is even true with Baron de Brane, one of the best second wines on display. Drinking Window 2019 – 2034.
There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The Margaux appellation of France's legendary Bordeaux wine region is one of the world's most famous and highly respected viticultural areas. For centuries, Margaux has been deeply associated with extremely fine wines of the highest quality, made using traditional and time-honored techniques in order to extract the very best, most refined and elegant flavors and aromas from the Bordeaux varietal grapes which grow there. Margaux wines are almost always blended, using two or three key Bordeaux grapes, commonly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc (amongst others). The blending techniques and quantities have been passed down through the generations in the ancestral chateaus which make up the region, and quality and prestige has never been allowed to falter, making Margaux one of the undisputed jewels in France's already glittering crown.

Clean fruit character with lemon rind and mineral undertones. Medium body with fresh acidity and a medium tannin finish. Very good.

The 2012 Baron de Brane has an expressive bouquet that is equally divided between red and black fruit, all well defined; hints of dark chocolate and leather develop in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin; not overtly complex, but there is satisfying depth and grip toward the slightly meaty finish. Drink this now and over the next four to five years. Tasted at the Brane-Cantenac vertical at the château.
Winery Notes
A deep ruby colour with violet tints, showing remarkable intensity. A highly aromatic nose with black fruit aromas (blackberries and cassis) and delicate floral notes. Vanilla and spices are present on the second nose. The attack is full and round, and the mid-palate very generous, with sweet tannins. This is a well-balanced and full-flavoured wine.
