The 2017 Blanc de Noirs Les Ursules is superb, mingling aromas of pear, mandarin and stone fruit with hints of fresh bread, pastry cream and iodine in an inviting mélange. Full-bodied, layered and fleshy, it’s a concentrated, chiseled Ursules that’s built for the cellar, with racy acids and a long, penetrating finish. While the reputation of the 2017 vintage in Champagne isn’t great, you wouldn’t know that from tasting this brilliant cuvée. As readers will remember, Les Ursules was the vineyard with which Cédric Bouchard began Roses de Jeanne, and he notes that of all the wines in his range, it’s always the highest in acidity, the slowest to ferment and the slowest to conclude its malolactic fermentation.

The sparkling white wines to come out of Champagne's prestigious wineries have conquered the world, and are drank in celebration across the globe. The vast majority of the region is under vine, and grows predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varietals, which are usually blended together by master wine-makers in order to make their recognizable and widely loved produce. The north-easterly region of Champagne has a relatively cool climate, and quite a lot of rainfall, making it far from ideal for ripening grapes. However, the presence of heavily forested areas in the region helps maintain a balanced temperature, and the generations of expertise the wineries hold clearly produces excellent results in spite of the climatic problems.

The 2017 Blanc de Noirs Les Ursules presents a soft, hushed expression of Pinot Noir. Dried orchard fruit, ginger, lemon confit and dried flowers. Perfumed, floral accents add a pretty flourish. Like all of the 2017s, the Ursules comes across as a bit light and best suited to relatively near-term drinking. No dosage. Disgorged: 2021.
