The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively â€“ full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness. However, it is when they are aged in oak that they take on some truly special flavors and aromas, as seen in some of the finest wines of the Old World.

Lots of dried red fruits followed by roasted rosemary and green peppercorns, along with a sweet and sour note with cured meats and leather. Medium-bodied, firm tannins and refreshing acidity. Piquant and mineral finish. Exotic and savory wine that is very expressive and showing its personality. Drinkable now but give this a few more years to see its full development. Try after 2026.

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio al Carro opens slowly in the glass, darkly floral and earth-inspired with minty herbs and white smoke, complicating woodland berries. This displays textures of pure silk lifted by brisk acidity as cooling mineral tones further enliven its tart red berry fruits. Staining and long, the 2019 finishes with youthful tension that puckers the cheeks as fine tannins grumble yet fail to slow its momentum. This is a fantastic rendition of Poggio al Carro.

Winery Notes

Ruby red pleasantly tending to garnet; the nose is spicy, intense and persistent, well integrated with the large wood used for aging. Very harmonious wine as a whole, it appears warm, savory and very structured on the palate.
