Regularly described as being the grape varietal responsible for producing the world's most romantic wines, Pinot Noir has long been associated with elegance and a broad range of flavors The name means 'black pine' in French, and this is due to the fact that the fruit of this particular varietal is especially dark in color, and hangs in a conical shape, like that of a pine cone. Winemaker Gavin Chanin is re-releasing some back vintages he has been holding in the cellar, including this 2012 Pinot Noir Bien Nacido Vineyard. Pale garnet, it opens with struck match character and earthy tones of underbrush, mushrooms and tobacco, plus a core of spicy dark fruit. The medium-bodied palate is chalky and fresh with fully mature flavors and a long, earthy finish. It hasn't matured as gracefully as the 2012 Chardonnay from the Sanford & Benedict Vineyard, and it will be best over the next 2-3 years while it still offers a core of fruit.
