Loire Valley

Within France, the one region most closely associated with fine white and rosé wines is surely the Loire Valley. With over eight controlled appellations, and a relatively large expanse of land covering this wide valley, the Loire Valley is an ideal location for wineries wishing to produce large quantities of excellent quality vines for their wine production. Indeed, this region has been associated with excellent white wines for over a thousand years, with it once being the favorite wine region for the crowned heads of England, France and beyond. Today, it produces a wide range of white wines, and several rosé and red varieties also. It is also widely celebrated for being home to some of France's most lively and fruity sparkling crémant wines, which more than match those produced in nearby Champagne.

Appellation

Chinon

Chinon is an appellation in the Loire Valley of France, known for its red wines made primarily from Cabernet Franc, with some rosé and white wines produced as well. Established as an AOC (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée) in 1937, Chinon’s vineyards thrive along the Vienne River, benefiting from a temperate climate and diverse soils ranging from limestone to gravel. Chinon reds are celebrated for their versatility, offering both light, fruity styles and more structured, age-worthy expressions. The wines often display aromas of red berries, violets, and earthy notes, with soft tannins and a refreshing acidity. A hallmark of Chinon is its ability to balance freshness with complexity, making it a great choice for pairing with a variety of dishes, especially roasted meats, mushrooms, and soft cheeses. White Chinon, made from Chenin Blanc, offers crisp acidity and flavors of citrus and green apple, though it is much less common.

The 2017 Chinon Clos de la Dioterie retains its great depth of color and feels incredibly young compared with many other 2017s from the region. Demonstrating excellent concentration and full body, it is round and without any angles. There's plenty of stuffing here, yet it remains elegant and coats the mouth with a delightfully fine tannic veil. You could drink it now, but that would be infanticide. If you like classy Right Bank wines that use Cabernet Franc as their base, you'll be pleasantly surprised at this wine.

The 2017 Chinon Clos de la Dioterie is from a northeast-facing monopole right next to the winery overlooking the Varennes du Grand Clos. This historic clos of just over two hectares hosts low-yielding 70- to 80-year-old vines rooting deep in a clayey, highly calcareous soils. The nose is deep, intense and perfectly ripe as well as elegant and seamless, and it exhibits ripe, dark berry aromas and remarkably fine limestone finesse with bloody meat notes. On the palate, this is a thoroughly vital red with great finesse and intensity and all the tributes you may expect from an icon wine of the appellation. The finish is vital, fresh, lemony, salty and highly stimulating if not mouthwatering but also stringent and tensioned, with perfect fruit ripeness and a gorgeous tannin/acidity structure. Impressive. Tasted in June 2021.

Winery Notes

The Clos de la Dioterie is located right next to the winery, overlooking the Varennes du Grand Clos. This historic vineyard of just over two hectares is astonishing for the age of its vines (70 to 80 years old), but also for its highly calcareous clay soil and its north-east exposure, ideal for perfect ripening. These very old vines with low yields (30 hl/ha) are the object of particularly attentive care.
