A bright and finely crafted red with blackberry, blueberry, limestone, violet and crushed stone aromas. It’s medium-bodied with very silky tannins and a salty and minerally aftertaste that’s refined and fascinating. A hint of flowers at the end. This shows the true character of the diverse vineyards of this estate. 98% merlot and 2% cabernet franc. Still tight. Give it two or three years. Best after 2028.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

A gorgeous, complex wine, the 2023 Château Bélair-Monange reminds me of an improved 2012 with its ripe black cherries, spring flowers, spice, violets, and graphite. Based on 98% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, it's medium to full-bodied on the palate, with ultra-fine tannins, wonderfully integrated acidity, and a great finish. It's a clear success in the vintage and just a joy to drink even today, yet it will keep for 25+ years. Drink 2026-2051.

One of the highlights in Moueix’s portfolio this year, the 2023 Château Bélair-Monange has turned out superbly, revealing aromas of rose petals, violet, mulberries, cassis and spices. Medium- to full-bodied, layered and enveloping, it is built around a fleshy core of fruit framed by powdery tannins, its vibrancy heightened by lively acidity derived from its calcareous soils, concluding with a long, ethereal finish.

The 2023 Bélair-Monange is an elegant, sophisticated wine. Silky tannins and lifted aromatics convey the essence of finesse. Sweet floral notes open first. On the palate, the 2023 is remarkably polished for such a young wine. Then again, we are on Saint-Émilion's famed limestone plateau, where wines are born with refinement.

93-94 2023 Belair Monange has a bit of a rustic nose, and is a bit closed. The taste is intense and fruity and the wine is still masked by heavy tannins and a big core of massive, vibrant and crunchy fruit. It will never win a price for elegance but its deep reservoir of fruit an tannins should secure a long life ahead for this classically built wine. Save it for 7-9 years before trying a bottle.
