This château is progressing well in raising its quality as this big, chunky wine shows. The fruit has a solid texture, with great black swirls of dark berry and smoky flavors in a tannic cloak. (Editors’ Choice)
There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

From the renowned vineyards of Bordeaux to the picturesque landscapes of Burgundy, France offers a wine lover’s dream journey. The Margaux appellation of France's legendary Bordeaux wine region is one of the world's most famous and highly respected viticultural areas. For centuries, Margaux has been deeply associated with extremely fine wines of the highest quality, made using traditional and time-honored techniques in order to extract the very best, most refined and elegant flavors and aromas from the Bordeaux varietal grapes which grow there. Margaux wines are almost always blended, using two or three key Bordeaux grapes, commonly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc (amongst others). The blending techniques and quantities have been passed down through the generations in the ancestral chateaus which make up the region, and quality and prestige has never been allowed to falter, making Margaux one of the undisputed jewels in France's already glittering crown.

Decanter
Deeply spiced damsons come through on the attack alongside touches of blue cheese that suggest this is just heading into the next phase of its evolution. It's still young with black fruits dominating, but you can see the tertiary black truffle, earth, leather and undergrowth notes starting to show through. This is a delicious Margaux but I would say a medium rather than long-term keeper (so in Margaux terms think 10 to 15 years more rather than upwards of 30). 33% of production in 1st wine, 60% new oak. Harvest October 1 to 19. Drinking Window 2020 - 2035.

A beautiful effort, the medium to full-bodied 2008 demonstrates the resurgence in quality being enjoyed by this long-time Margaux underachiever. Perfumed aromas of licorice, spring flowers, black currants and subtle oak are followed by a soft, round, opulent, sexy, generous, savory wine revealing no hard edges. Enjoy this pure, seductive 2008 over the next 12-15 years.

This solid red has a nice fleshy edge to its red and black currant fruit, laced with hints of coffee, maduro tobacco and iron. The finish firms up as the toast takes over. Drink now through 2015. 10,830 cases made.
