Varietal

Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Appellation

Saint Estephe

Saint-Estèphe, an esteemed appellation within Bordeaux's Left Bank, exemplifies the power and character of Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines. What makes Saint-Estèphe unique is its robust and structured reds, primarily crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The region's maritime influence from the Gironde estuary, coupled with gravelly soils, imparts distinctive minerality and a pronounced tannic backbone to the wines. Home to renowned châteaux like Cos d'Estournel and Montrose, Saint-Estèphe wines showcase a deep, dark fruit profile, nuanced with cedar, tobacco, and earthy notes. Unlike some neighboring appellations, Saint-Estèphe's lack of a formal classification system underscores its commitment to quality across its diverse vineyards. Exploring Saint-Estèphe unveils the essence of Bordeaux winemaking, where tradition, terroir, and a focus on the intrinsic character of Cabernet Sauvignon converge to create wines that resonate with strength, complexity, and the artistry of the region's winemakers.

WA 94pts

Wine Advocate

Not as concentrated as the 1982, or as most of the vintages made since 2001, the 1990 Cos has reached full maturity. It exhibits sweet berry fruit intermixed with spice box, herbs, and spring flowers. Expansive, round, and sensual, with wonderful purity as well as lushness, this irresistible wine can be enjoyed over the next 6-10 years. Release price: ($350.00/case)

JS 92pts

James Suckling

Refined with dark fruits with delicate spice and leather notes. It's full to medium-bodied, with fine tannins. It is a little funky. I would drink it.

WS 89pts

Wine Spectator

Very fresh and fine, with clean tannins and fruit, a spicy, berry character and a long, long finish. Full to medium body. Little dull. '89/'90 Bordeaux non-blind horizontal. Drink now. 30,000 cases made.
