97-99 As always, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Roussanne Vieilles Vignes comes from a three-hectare parcel planted in 1909. It’s richer, creamier and longer than Beaucastel’s regular white Châteauneuf-du-Pape but also fresher and brinier. It looks even more impressive than the stunning 2016.
Roussanne is a white grape variety originating from the Rhône Valley in France, known for producing aromatic and complex wines. It is often blended with Marsanne to create wines that are full-bodied and richly textured, with flavors of ripe pear, honey, herbal notes, and hints of nuts. Roussanne wines can also exhibit floral aromas such as honeysuckle, along with a characteristic waxy texture that adds to their mouthfeel. What makes Roussanne unique is its ability to age gracefully, developing deeper flavors and a more pronounced aromatic profile over time. The grape's low yields and susceptibility to mildew require careful vineyard management, contributing to its reputation as a prized varietal among winemakers in the Rhône Valley and beyond. Roussanne wines pair well with poultry, creamy sauces, and dishes featuring Mediterranean herbs, offering a sophisticated drinking experience.

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.
Appellation
Chateauneuf Du Pape
Châteauneuf-du-Pape, an illustrious wine appellation in the Southern Rhône Valley, France, stands as a vinous icon recognized for its robust red blends. What makes Châteauneuf-du-Pape unique is its historic heritage, boasting ancient vineyards and a rich winemaking tradition dating back to the papal residence in Avignon. The region allows an assemblage of up to 13 grape varieties, prominently featuring Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. The distinctive galets, large round stones that retain heat, dotting the vineyards contribute to the wines' complexity and distinctive character.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape reds are known for their full-bodied nature, rich dark fruit flavors, and a medley of spices, all underscored by a unique herbaceous quality known as garrigue. The appellation's commitment to traditional winemaking, coupled with its unique terroir, results in wines that exemplify the quintessence of Southern Rhône winemaking, offering enthusiasts a captivating taste of history and the sun-drenched landscapes of Provence.

96-99 Last of the whites, huge notes of buttered citrus, exotic flowers, pineapple, honeysuckle, and almond notes all emerge from the 2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Roussanne Vieilles Vignes, a rich, yet fresh, elegant, vibrant barrel sample that does everything right. You can't find a wine like this anywhere else in the world, and it’s consistently one of the world’s great white wines.

Sweet-smelling apples and pears, waxy lemon peel and some nicely weighted oak influence. Fleshy depth to the finish. This has concentration and richness with elegance. From a small, around 3-ha parcel of original vines, between 85 and 100-years old. Drink or hold.
