Noble aromatics of freshly cut herbs, dewy meadow grass, white flower, cassis and tobacco leaf signify a wine of finesse, with balancing acidity and showy brightness for a 2009. Still quite youthful, with noticeable tannins, indeed tasting younger than its age. Gorgeous freshness on the finish.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The Margaux appellation of France's legendary Bordeaux wine region is one of the world's most famous and highly respected viticultural areas. For centuries, Margaux has been deeply associated with extremely fine wines of the highest quality, made using traditional and time-honored techniques in order to extract the very best, most refined and elegant flavors and aromas from the Bordeaux varietal grapes which grow there. Margaux wines are almost always blended, using two or three key Bordeaux grapes, commonly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc (amongst others). The blending techniques and quantities have been passed down through the generations in the ancestral chateaus which make up the region, and quality and prestige has never been allowed to falter, making Margaux one of the undisputed jewels in France's already glittering crown.

A strong effort from proprietor Emmanuel Cruse, d’Issan’s 2009 was fashioned from minuscule yields of 18 hectoliters per hectare, and its 13.7% natural alcohol set a record at this estate. Composed of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon and 38% Merlot, it exhibits a classic Margaux fragrance of acacia flowers/violets, blueberries, cassis, licorice and camphor. Opulent and full-bodied with silky tannins as well as a rich, dense style, it will be interesting to compare the 2009 with the brilliant 2000 and 2005 over the next two to three decades. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2035+.

The 2009 d’Issan is endowed with an intense and classically styled bouquet, quite tight at the beginning but opening with black plum and bilberry scents. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, almost Pauillac in style with graphite infused black fruit and a long, black pepper and cedar infused finish. A classic Margaux in every sense, with complexity, perfume, and elegance prized over power and richness, the 2009 Château D'Issan reveals a still youthful ruby/plum color as well as beautiful notes of blackcurrants, unsmoked tobacco, cedary herbs, and truffly earth. It shows the rich, sunny style of the vintage and is certainly medium to full-bodied, but it's weightless, nicely balanced, and just classy Bordeaux all the way. Enjoy bottles any time over the coming 20 years or more.
