Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. 89-91 The 2019 du Retout is inky purple in colour. The bouquet is clean and pure with blackberry tinged with graphite and black truffle, all nicely delineated and growing in intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with quite sharp tannins, compact and maybe leaner than some of its peers, though with satisfying persistence on the pencil lead infused finish. Fine.

This is an excellent quality Cru Bourgeois located in Cussac-Fort-Médoc, with spice, black pepper and touches of cinnamon and cassis notes. I really like how it unfurls in the glass with clear grip and a liquorice blast on the finish. Harvest September 24 to October 9, with ageing for 12 months in one third new oak. Blending completed by mid November. 3.85pH, tannin index of 86IPT.

This is a pretty red with currants, walnuts and lightly toasted oak. Medium body, fine tannins and a fresh finish. 70% cabernet sauvignon, 24% merlot and 6% petit verdot. Drink after 2023.
