A monumental bottle of Sauternes despite a moderate level of residual sugar (122 grams per liter), the 2006 d'Yquem displays a singular, distinctive and elegant bouquet with aromas of thyme, sage, curry, baked pineapple and oregano. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it’s rich and concentrated, with superb acidity on the mid-palate as well as freshness, tension and crystalline texture, concluding on an endless, ethereal finish with a racy bitterness. Simply stunning!

94-96 Barrel sample. This is the rich wine of the vintage. With its intense fruit, piles of spice, but excellent balance, this promises flavors of baked apples and intense dried fruits. The botrytis layer is discreet, a hint rather than overpowering.

The last time I tasted the 2006 Yquem was at the tail end of the pandemic. This bottle has a cohesive bouquet with lanolin, saffron and dried honey scents – not as flattering as the newborn 2023 tasted alongside, but certainly more appealing than the 1996. The palate delivers moderate complexity and a fine thread of acidity, quite viscous as you would hope with stem ginger and quince developing on the finish. There is something just a tad Germanic about this '06, and I do not mean that negatively. Tasted at L'Abeille restaurant in New York from an ex-château bottle and then from magnum at the Académie du Vin dinner in Bordeaux.
