There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Rather dark and reticent, with bittersweet cocoa and licorice snap notes blocking off the core of ripe plum and boysenberry fruit, while the tarry undertow emerges more on the finish. A powerfully rendered 2009 Pomerol that will need cellaring to assimilate. Best from 2014 through 2027.

The 2009 vintage came two years after new owners, Generali France, took over at La Pointe. They brought in Eric Monneret as director and Hubert de Boüard as consultant, while installing drainage in the vineyard, pulling up the Cabernet Sauvignon and renovating the cellar and vat room. We are starting to feel the results in this wine – it has fleshy, bright and cheerful autumnal fruit flavours and a good structure to the tannins without going overboard. This is a great Pomerol, where you get the joy of the vintage and the appellation, but in a form that's approachable now. Drinking Window 2019 - 2036.

This 2009 is the finest La Pointe ever! We can thank the new owners, who had the foresight to hire Hubert de Bouard as their consultant. This blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc from the relatively sandy soils of this vineyard, situated well-off the tenderloin plateau of Pomerol, has a dense purple color and oodles of plum sauce interwoven with blueberry, raspberry and black cherry notes. Full-bodied, opulent, fleshy and very sexy, it should be drunk over the next decade.
