Rich and concentrated on the nose with perfumed notes as well as dark fruit and liquorice spice. Smooth but firm, this has weight and density in the mouth with fleshy black fruit, lively acidity and a long finish with chocolate and mint. Still feels fairly serious, this has broad shoulders and a wide frame but with gorgeously pure and juicy fruit. I like the combination of crunchy acidity and plush tannins, it really works. Excellent mid plate vibrancy. A touch of oak gives a bite to the finish but this will settle.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The Margaux appellation of France's legendary Bordeaux wine region is one of the world's most famous and highly respected viticultural areas. For centuries, Margaux has been deeply associated with extremely fine wines of the highest quality, made using traditional and time-honored techniques in order to extract the very best, most refined and elegant flavors and aromas from the Bordeaux varietal grapes which grow there. Margaux wines are almost always blended, using two or three key Bordeaux grapes, commonly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc (amongst others). The blending techniques and quantities have been passed down through the generations in the ancestral chateaus which make up the region, and quality and prestige has never been allowed to falter, making Margaux one of the undisputed jewels in France's already glittering crown.

Tasted on multiple occasions, the inky-hued 2022 Château Labégorce (50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) reveals a perfumed, intense nose of ripe black cherries, cassis, spicy oak, and violets. This carries to an exotic, full-bodied Margaux that brings beautiful purity, a supple, layered, elegant mouthfeel, polished tannins, and a great finish. It's a big, powerful wine that I wouldn't be surprised to see close down over the coming 3-4 years. It will evolve for at least two decades.

This cuvée from Nathalie Perrodo and team is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. It opens with a dark, smoky and toasted nose, currently loaded with the scents of high-toast oak, manifesting as cedar, tobacco, dark chocolate and then more cedar. Underneath I see layers of liquorice, black pepper and currant. The palate is softly polished, supple and bright, with dark and powdery fruit substance, all damson, currant, black olive and toast, with a rich spindle of ripe and well integrated tannins at its core, and fresh acidity too. This is very impressive, with a balanced and confident grip which persists long into the finish. A great example of the 2022 vintage from Labégorce. Tasted twice. The alcohol on the label is 14%.

The blackcurrant and blackberry aromas are very attractive here. It’s medium-bodied with firm and silky tannins and a pretty finish. Not the most complex wine, but focused and complete. Drink after 2028.

This is suave, with alder smoke–infused blackberry and black cherry compote flavors carried by a note of warm humus and backed by echoing violet and iris notes on the finish. The 2022 Labégorce has a more backward and introspective bouquet with earthy black fruit, tea leaves and bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins, very classical in style and austere compared to other Margaux wines, with a very understated finish, which is possibly why I scored it lower. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting in London.
