White Bordeaux

France is widely known as being the home of many of the world's finest white wines, and within France, the name which rings out across the wine world and is always associated with excellence of quality and flavor is Bordeaux. The white wines of the magnificent Bordeaux region are typically blended, and rely on the winemaker's skill and expertise to achieve the fine balance between the primary grape varietals used. Most blended white Bordeaux wines are made up of Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle varietals, although there are actually nine grapes officially allowed by French wine law for the inclusion in Bordeaux white wines. The other six are Sauvignon Gris, Merlot Blanc, Ugni Blanc, Colombard, Ondenc and Mauzac, although the use of these other grapes has been in steady decline over the past century.

Appellation

Graves

Graves, a venerable appellation in Bordeaux, France, is renowned for its historical significance and the production of distinguished red and white wines. What makes Graves unique is its diverse terroir, featuring gravelly soils that not only lend the region its name but also provide excellent drainage and heat reflection, contributing to the ripening of grapes. Red wines from Graves are predominantly blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, offering a balanced expression of dark fruits, structure, and age-worthy potential. The appellation is also celebrated for its exceptional white wines, primarily crafted from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. These whites showcase bright acidity, citrus flavors, and a unique flinty character. The 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion Blanc is elegant and supremely polished. Tangerine peel, apricot, white flowers and a kiss of French oak are all laced together. The Blanc offers a compelling mix of textural richness and brightness. All the elements are impeccably balanced as mineral notes lift the finish. Striking.

An exotic, upfront, expressive white, the 2022 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion Blanc has ample orange blossom, honeyed flowers, and spicy notes as well as a richer, broad, layered style on the palate. It brings beautiful depth and richness, medium to full body, and outstanding length. Based on 86% Sauvignon Blanc and 14% Semillon, it's a white geared for the dinner table.

Fresh and perfumed, the 2022 Blanc from Larrivet Haut-Brion exhibits aromas of white fruits, flowers, spring blossoms and confit citrus. Medium to full-bodied, charming and enrobing, it has a lively, vibrant and juicy core of fruit, delicate acidity and a long, mouthwatering finish. This blend of 86% Sauvignon Blanc and 14% Sémillon is a real success.

A flattering style, with a kiss of warm brioche added onto a core of lemon curd, white peach and straw. Tarragon and verbena notes add range in the background. Nicely done. Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Drink now through 2029. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 1,000 cases made, 200 cases imported.

Sauvignon Blanc rules here, at 86% of the blend, with 14% Semillon. There is a sense of confidence on the nose, all finely tuned citrus fruits, fresh lemon and orange zest, swirled with crushed gravel and a twist of mint, which swamps any of the less appealing raw phenolic elements seen in some other wines. A rather correct and reserved style follows on the palate, with a polished texture and modest acidity, which manages to carry the midpalate, helped by a rich phenolic grip. Nicely integrated, with plenty of bitter energy and drive at the end, this shows fairly well, and is a good result in this vintage. Of course, from Larrivet-Haut-Brion, we should expect nothing less. Tasted twice.
