There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The Margaux appellation of France's legendary Bordeaux wine region is one of the world's most famous and highly respected viticultural areas. For centuries, Margaux has been deeply associated with extremely fine wines of the highest quality, made using traditional and time-honored techniques in order to extract the very best, most refined and elegant flavors and aromas from the Bordeaux varietal grapes which grow there. Margaux wines are almost always blended, using two or three key Bordeaux grapes, commonly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc (amongst others). The blending techniques and quantities have been passed down through the generations in the ancestral chateaus which make up the region, and quality and prestige has never been allowed to falter, making Margaux one of the undisputed jewels in France's already glittering crown.

A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc aged 18 months in 60-70% new barrels, foudres, and amphorae, the 2023 Château Lascombes is an incredibly classy, serious Margaux with darker fruits, spicy wood, dried flowers, and chocolate-driven aromatics. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has ripe, polished tannins, beautiful purity and balance, and a great finish. This is the first year where Axel had full control, and this wine is brilliantly done. It will keep for 30 years. Drink 2029-2056.

93-95 2023 Lascombes has a densely packed nose with lots of fruit and cassis. It is loaded with fruit, cassis and tannins and is still very backward and closed. The overly sweet components often found in modern Lascombes are gone and instead this wine is made along the lines of a true classic that will be interesting to follow.

Elegantly oaked and gently toasty, the 2023 Lascombes—a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot—emerges from the glass with aromas of dark berries, pencil shavings, spices and violets. Medium- to full-bodied, dense and enveloping, it is framed by powdery structuring tannins and concludes with a long, pencil-shaving-inflected finish. It's in keeping with the new direction taken by the estate.

The 2023 Lascombes, which was bottled June 2025, was raised in barrels, foudres and, for the first time, amphora. This has a delightful bouquet that is very different from the wines that precede Axel Heinz's arrival. Nicely detailed, fresh and floral (peony and violet), it unfolds gracefully in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with sapid red fruit, finely detailed tannins, admirable symmetry with quite a minerally finish. This is a classy Lascombes that continues its move away from the more bombastic style of the previous decade.
