Lovely purity of fruit, with cherry, blackberry and walnut aromas and just a hint of oranges. Medium- to full-bodied with super-tight tannins and structure. Creamy texture and a long finish. Crunchy at the end. 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc. Better after 2028.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The 2023 Le Bon Pasteur has come together over time. Black cherry, plum, mocha, espresso, licorice, chocolate and lavender soar from the glass. In recent years, the team here has given the wine a bit more freshness than in the past. It's an approach that works so well. As always, Le Bon Pasteur is a distinctive Pomerol because nearly 50% of the vineyards are in Saint-Émilion.

From the team of Dany and Michel Roland, the 2023 Château Le Bon Pasteur checks in as 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc that spent 15 months in 50% new barrels with the balance in second-fill barrels and amphorae. Ripe red and black fruits, smoked tobacco, chocolate, and spicy wood all define the nose, and it's medium to full-bodied on the palate, with ripe, round, wonderfully textured, seamless tannins, integrated acidity, no hard edges, and a great finish. I love it today, yet this is going to shine over the coming 25 years or more. Drink 2026-2051.

92-93 2023 Le Bon Pasteur has a fresh, cherry-like nose and a very well composed fruity core. It is intense, solid and has lots of well packed perfectly ripe fruit and red berries followed by a fresh aftertaste. This is a good wine that should age effortless and provide nice drinking early on as well.
