A full, rich wine from the Bonnie family, this is textured and packed with white fruits and spice. Judiciously wood aged, the wine is ripe and robust. It will certainly age well. Drink from 2026. (Cellar Selection)

White Bordeaux

France is widely known as being the home of many of the world's finest white wines, and within France, the name which rings out across the wine world and is always associated with excellence of quality and flavor is Bordeaux. The white wines of the magnificent Bordeaux region are typically blended, and rely on the winemaker's skill and expertise to achieve the fine balance between the primary grape varietals used. Most blended white Bordeaux wines are made up of Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle varietals, although there are actually nine grapes officially allowed by French wine law for the inclusion in Bordeaux white wines. The other six are Sauvignon Gris, Merlot Blanc, Ugni Blanc, Colombard, Ondenc and Mauzac, although the use of these other grapes has been in steady decline over the past century.

Appellation

Graves

Graves, a venerable appellation in Bordeaux, France, is renowned for its historical significance and the production of distinguished red and white wines. What makes Graves unique is its diverse terroir, featuring gravelly soils that not only lend the region its name but also provide excellent drainage and heat reflection, contributing to the ripening of grapes. Red wines from Graves are predominantly blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, offering a balanced expression of dark fruits, structure, and age-worthy potential. The appellation is also celebrated for its exceptional white wines, primarily crafted from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. These whites showcase bright acidity, citrus flavors, and a unique flinty character. Graves is home to renowned châteaux like Haut-Brion, a Premier Cru Classé, exemplifying the region's commitment to producing wines of exceptional quality and character. Exploring Graves unveils the essence of Bordeaux winemaking, where tradition and terroir converge to create wines that resonate with history and sophistication.

#73 in Top 100 Wines of France, 2024. The fine haze of oak spices is spot-on now with a mineral verve and lots of green stone fruit to the nose. This is broad and full-bodied on the palate with refreshing acidity and a fine bite of tannins that lends additional structure and seriousness to this white. Better from 2024.

A fresh and fragranced nose with green fruit, apple, pear and lemon touches. Crisp and clean, lots of bitter grapefruit and orange combined with creamy lemon and apple giving a push pull of flavours. Not yet fully harmonised but there is potential. Lots of flavour nuance and good viscosity and weighty texture with a long length and good lift on the finish. Well made with promise.

A blend of 89% Sauvignon Blanc and 11% Sémillon, the 2021 Château Malartic-Lagravière Blanc plays in the vibrant, racy style of the vintage, yet I love its overall purity, preciseness, and vibrancy. Ripe lemon and lime fruits, mint, and sappy herbs all define the aromatics, and it's medium-bodied, beautifully balanced, and has a crisp, clean finish that will allow it to be incredibly versatile on the dinner table.

90-93 The 2021 Malartic Lagravière Blanc shows promise, bursting with aromas of lime zest, fresh mint, grapefruit and pastry cream. Medium to full-bodied, chiseled and nicely concentrated, it's a taut, intensely flavored wine that concludes with a long, saline finish.

The 2021 Malartic-Lagravière Blanc, which contains less Sémillon (11%) due to frost damage, has a delightful bouquet with vibrant green apple, pear, wet limestone and light, dew-dappled lawn scents. The palate is well-balanced with a silver bead of acidity and just the right amount of citrus peel to compliment the notes of tangerine and orange pith. Bearing fine weight on the finish, this is a delicious white Pessac-Léognan that will age well in bottle.

The 2021 Malartic Lagraviere Blanc leaps from the glass with notes of freshly squeezed lemons, lime leaves, and lime cordial, followed by hints of struck flint and grapefruit oil. Medium-bodied, the palate is nicely poised, with soft acidity and a whispery finish.

Quite plump, with a good, juicy edge to its mix of apricot, mirabelle plum and yellow apple notes. There's light hints of salted butter and bitter almond on the finish. Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Drink now through 2026. 620 cases made.
