This is a fragrant and very attractive mid-weight wine with plenty of ripe fruit to balance the full, dry tannins, which give it some real power on the finish. Drink or hold.

Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Appellation

Margaux

The Margaux appellation of France's legendary Bordeaux wine region is one of the world's most famous and highly respected viticultural areas. For centuries, Margaux has been deeply associated with extremely fine wines of the highest quality, made using traditional and time-honored techniques in order to extract the very best, most refined and elegant flavors and aromas from the Bordeaux varietal grapes which grow there. Margaux wines are almost always blended, using two or three key Bordeaux grapes, commonly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc (amongst others). The blending techniques and quantities have been passed down through the generations in the ancestral chateaus which make up the region, and quality and prestige has never been allowed to falter, making Margaux one of the undisputed jewels in France's already glittering crown.

This is a concentrated wine, packed with tannins and black plum fruits. It has some of the fruity crispness of the vintage although with its dark structure and concentration it is obviously a wine that needs to soften over time. Rich and juicy at the end, it will be ready to drink from 2024.

Very good black fruits nose and fine supple palate with natural concentration, finesse and fragrance. A charming wine with enough depth for the future. Drinking Window 2018 - 2030.

From the southern part of Margaux, the 2014 Château Prieure Lichine is little gem well worth seeking out. Offering lots of classic black cherry fruit, tobacco, herbs, and damp earth, it’s medium to full-bodied, impeccably balanced, and has moderate, chalky tannins on the finish. Like most 2014s, it’s already drinking nicely, yet is going to keep for 15 years or so. Tasted twice.

On the herbal side, with distinct bay and savory notes leading the way, followed by lightly steeped red currant and damson plum notes. Shows a good streak of black tea through the finish, where a cedar thread appears. Best from 2018 through 2024. 15,000 cases made.
