There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The Margaux appellation of France's legendary Bordeaux wine region is one of the world's most famous and highly respected viticultural areas. For centuries, Margaux has been deeply associated with extremely fine wines of the highest quality, made using traditional and time-honored techniques in order to extract the very best, most refined and elegant flavors and aromas from the Bordeaux varietal grapes which grow there. Margaux wines are almost always blended, using two or three key Bordeaux grapes, commonly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc (amongst others). The blending techniques and quantities have been passed down through the generations in the ancestral chateaus which make up the region, and quality and prestige has never been allowed to falter, making Margaux one of the undisputed jewels in France's already glittering crown.

The 2005 Rauzan-Ségla is captivating right from the very first taste. Soaring aromatics and bright veins of minerality confer energy to this statuesque Margaux. The 2005 is still a very young wine. In fact, I would cellar it for a few years. I am blown away by its energy, vibrant and sheer character. Bright red-toned fruit, spice, rose petal, blood orange and crushed rocks literally soar out of the glass. The 2005 captures the richness of the year, but it remains a classically built, mid-weight wine of remarkable freshness and tension. Rauzan-Ségla might very well be the most under the radar Left Bank wine in 2005. Magnificent.

A blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, the 2005 Rauzan-Segla is medium to deep garnet in color, with a touch of brick. It needs a lot of shaking to wake up fragrant notes of rose oil, cardamom, iron ore, and dried cherries, opening out to a core of blackcurrant pastilles, cigar box, and star anise, plus a touch of Darjeeling tea. The medium-bodied palate delivers taut, muscular red and black fruits, with a firm, fine-grained texture and fantastic tension, finishing very long, with loads of mineral and floral layers. It’s just gorgeous and still has many years ahead of it.

A great bottle, the 2005 Château Rauzan-Segla was open and incredibly expressive, with a complex, full-bodied, concentrated style that benefited from just a touch of air. Ripe currants, smoked tobacco, saddle leather, and spicy underbrush-like notes all just about jump out of the glass, and it has velvety tannins, a broad, layered mid-palate, and outstanding length. Drink this sexy, seamless, incredibly impressive Margaux over the coming 15-20 years.

Deep garnet in color, the 2005 Rauzan-Ségla sings of plum preserves, redcurrant jelly, raspberry pie, kirsch and blackcurrant cordial with nuances of dried lavender, rose hip tea, hoisin and incense. The medium to full-bodied palate is densely packed with rich, expansive black fruits with loads of incense and exotic spice sparks, finishing long and layered. Still quite youthful, I anticipate a long life ahead for this perfumed beauty!

2005 is a vintage that has taken its time to soften, but here the austerity of its youth has now given way to floral Margaux notes of roses and dried flowers, together with gorgeous exotic spices, brambled black fruits and smoky edge that Rauzan Segla does so well. It's beginning to motor along, and is a great wine for pairing with food right now. Harvest ran from 21 September to 7 October, giving a 39hl/ha yield. 2% Cabernet Franc completes the blend. 70% new oak.
