Sociando-Mallet 2018 has a deep garnet purple color. It opens with medicinal and leather wafts, over a core of cassis and blackberry preserves, with hints of olives and cracked pepper. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a good amount of vibrant black fruit, grainy tannins and a lively backbone, leading to an energetic finish.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Dusty spices with lead pencil, graphite and blackcurrants. Barely any evolution on the nose. Structured, virile and fine-grained, with medium to full body and juicy, nicely fluid center palate. Fine-boned and still four-squared. Typical style of Sociando-Mallet. This is more about bones than flesh. 60% merlot, 37% cabernet sauvignon and 3% cabernet franc. Lovely now, but the tannin and the freshness will allow it to keep well. From a vertical tasting at the winery.

The 2014 Sociando-Mallet put in a great performance in barrel. Now in bottle, the sophistication is evident on the nose with beautifully defined black fruit tinged with cedar and graphite. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, supple tannin, a silver bead of acidity and superb focus towards the finish. The energy here is superb and it tempts you back immediately for another sip. Probably a Sociano-Mallet that will drink young, yet there is the class to suggest it will age supremely well.

The 2014 Sociando Mallet shows a lot of vanillary new oak on the nose. It seemed out of proportion to the fruit, so it feels seductive but lacks typicité. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin: tarry black fruit, sea salt and cracked black pepper that define its assertive finish. This showed promise straight after bottling but here, I found it difficult to see how it will evolve. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Nose a little closed, though there is a confidence to the texture here: smooth and sumptuous but not too slick or overdone, with evident but rounded tannins. One for the cellar.
