Another big, dark St.-Estèphe, but in spite of the rich body and some perceptible alcohol, there is also a cool, minty note. Slightly sweet finish in spite of all the tannins. Spice comes through at the end. Drink in 2020. (Suckling)

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

91–93 Barrel Sample. Fruit forward, this wine shows ripe blackberries and dark plums on the palate. It exudes a richness that is contrasted by intense acidity and lifted fruit flavors.

The 2014 Tronquoy-Lalande has a more elegant, refined bouquet compared to its peers, a mixture of red and black fruit, cedar, iodine and violets, perhaps picked a little later? The palate is medium-bodied with a ferrous opening, and the tannins are a bit drier than I would have liked, though the overly spicy and persistent finish is complex. It will be intriguing to see how this ages further in bottle. This is a very positive showing for one of the most under-rated estates in Saint-Estèphe. From the owners of Château Montrose, the 2014 Tronquoy Lalande is a beautifully ripe, pure, nicely concentrated, and classic wine from this estate that literally screams “Saint-Estèphe” in its dark currant and cassis fruits and notes of damp earth, tobacco, and underbrush. With a medium-bodied, reserved feel on the palate, it certainly has the 2014 vintage’s elegant, balanced style, as well as nicely integrated acidity and polished tannin. It doesn’t have the wow factor of the 2015 and 2016, but is a beautiful wine none the less that should blossom with 3-4 years of bottle age and keep for a decade or more.

A pure, racy version, with an iron-edged frame that keeps the red currant and damson plum fruit very focused. Mouthwatering tobacco and wet pebble accents are inlaid on the pleasantly austere finish. Well done. Best from 2018 through 2024.

From the same team as Château Montrose, this is always a great wine, full of finesse and drama. This is very good quality, with a lovely rich, deep texture with sexy, ripe fruit. The alcohol is perhaps the highest of the appellation in this vintage, but it's balanced. 1% Cabernet Franc rounds out the blend.

Composed of 56% Merlot, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, and 1% Cabernet Franc, the 2014 Tronquoy-Lalande is deep garnet colored. It slides effortlessly out of the glass with evolving notes of tobacco, sauteed herbs, spice box, and incense over a core of fruitcake and plum preserves. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegant and refreshing, framed by chewy tannins and finishing with a peppery kick.
