Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Deep, opulent but also restrained, with medium to full body and structured, fine-grained tannins. Long and vertical at the end but also quite floral. One of the best we have tasted. Good potential over the next decade. Drink from 2026.

The 2023 Clos Beauregard is a very pretty Pomerol from vines on sandy soils. Macerated cherry, tobacco, new leather and cedar fill out the layers. This is a very good wine that pushes the limits of what is possible in Pomerol's southern sector.

A 100% Merlot from clay and deeper gravelly soils, the 2023 Clos Beauregard sports a deep ruby/plum hue as well as classic Pomerol notes of black cherries, plums, scorched earth, and smoky tobacco and chocolate nuances. Aged 12 months in 30-40% new French oak, it's medium to full-bodied on the palate, with a plump, layered mouthfeel, ripe yet building tannins, and a great finish. Give it 2-3 years and enjoy over the following 15 or so. Drink 2028-2043.
