Sauvignon Blanc

The green skinned grapes of the Sauvignon Blanc varietal had their origins in Southern France, where they are still widely grown and used for many of the excellent young and aged white wines the region is famous for. Today, however, they are grown in almost every wine producing country in the world, and are widely revered for their fresh and grassy flavors, full of tropical notes and refreshing, zesty character. Sauvignon Blanc grapes thrive best in moderate climates, and ripen relatively early in the year. This has made them a favorite for many wineries in the New World, where they can still produce healthy and high yields in the earlier part of the summer before the temperatures become too hot. Too much heat has a massively adverse effect on Sauvignon Blanc, as the grapes become dull in their flavor, and the wine produced from them loses all its unique character and high points. As such, Sauvignon Blanc farmers have had a lot of trouble from global warming and climate change, as they are being forced to harvest their crops increasingly earlier in the year when it is cool enough to do so.

New Zealand

As with nearby Australia, New Zealand has over the past century proven itself to be a superb location for producing high quality wines in vast amounts, with much of the cooler regions of both islands being used primarily for vine cultivation. New Zealand wineries are notable for their enthusiasm in regards to experimentation, and for utilizing modern technologies and methods to make the most of the imported grape varietals which flourish in the rich, fertile soils and oceanic climate. In recent years, it has been the New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc wines which have gained the most attention, as a result of their smoky character and ability to carry the mineral rich nature of the terroir they grow in. Changing consumer interests have brought about a considerable rise in the production of organic and sustainable wines in New Zealand, of which again, the Sauvignon Blanc varietals are leading the way in regards to excellence, flavor and overall character.

Region

Marlborough

On the north-easterly tip of New Zealand's South Island, we find the beautiful region of Marlborough, home to some of the New World's finest white wines and dozens of quality vineyards. The region itself has been producing their award winning white wines – most commonly made with Sauvignon Blanc grapes – in large numbers since the 1970s, and is today widely recognized as being home to some of the best examples of both modern and traditional styles of Sauvignon Blanc wines. The region benefits from its dry and hot climate, and the cooling oceanic breezes which help the grapes there reach full ripeness. One of the key features of the Marlborough region is the fact that whilst the days are generally very hot, the nights are cold, thus allowing the vintners who work in the region to considerably extend the grapes' ripening period and encourage much more expression of flavor and terroir.

The 2023 Te Koko Sauvignon Blanc is nutty and savory, laden with tobacco, sandalwood, cashews, Golden Delicious apples, salted melon and preserved citrus. In the mouth, the wine is creamy and silky, with intense acidity that balances the textured fruit. I happen to think that oak and Sauvignon Blanc make awkward bedfellows most of the time; their integration must feel seamless in order for it to work, and it works here. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. This wine was sent to me as part of the 2025 Appellation Marlborough Wine (AMW) Collection, which annually features 12 cuveés that top the tasting submitted for the show, held in Blenheim each year. I have judged on the panel for this award (in 2022, from memory), and the process and the results are worth taking note of.

A succulent, barrel-aged Sauvignon Blanc, the 2023 Te Koko is focused and firm with plenty of intensity through its core. It has become less aromatically overt with time, as subtle varietal green tones meet citrus and a slight oak savouriness. There's no creaminess or sense of competition between fruit and wood, and good tension lends a clean, direct finish. A little more time in bottle will see this relax and integrate further.

Juicy and intense, with concentration to the passionfruit, pineapple, Key lime and kumquat flavors at the core. Details of toasted green tea, lemon thyme and makrut lime leaf add aromatic intensity, with a touch of crunchy sea salt on the finish. Drink now. 8,259 cases made, 207 cases imported.

Nose: Aromatic on the nose, with notes of white peach, preserved citrus and a hint of tropicality. Palate: The palate is expressive and vibrant, with a balance between ripe stone fruits and citrus intensity.
