Originating from the Mediterranean, Malvasia has been cultivated for centuries, with notable plantings in Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Greece. The most common variety, Malvasia Bianca, is widely used in both dry and sweet white wines, known for their aromatic richness and complexity. What makes Malvasia unique is its expressive aromatics and versatility. Dry Malvasia wines are typically floral and fruity, offering notes of white peach, apricot, citrus, honeysuckle, and almond, often with a slight oily texture. Sweeter styles, such as Malvasia delle Lipari, Malmsey Madeira, and Malvasia-based Vin Santo, develop honeyed, caramelized, and nutty flavors balanced by refreshing acidity. Today, the island is one of Italy's primary wine regions, and even though over eighty percent of Sicily's grapevines are used for the production of sweet fortified wines, the remaining wineries making other wine styles are renowned around the world for their quality and character. Indeed, Sicilian wineries are famed for their ability to capture something of the sun-drenched region in their wines, and the vines they cultivate benefit enormously from the almost constant sunshine and the incredibly fertile volcanic soils which typify the island.

This tapers off to freshness and a tropical flourish of mango and papaya. The Secca del Capo, a varietal Malvasia, is a fruit-forward, highly pleasurable, yet also nicely balanced effort.

Here's a new dry white wine from a young producer who interned with the Tasca family and farms on the main island of Sicily and on the satellite island of Salina. The vines are located on a little ledge that hangs out to sea near Capo Faro. The Cantine Colosi 2020 Secca del Capo is an easygoing and luminous expression of Malvasia with soapy floral aromas, tropical tones and a hint of latex or natural rubber. There is a hint of something almost exotic, with candied orange peel or sweet almond blossom.
