The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively â€“ full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness. Cupano's 2015 Cupano Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is stunning. It wafts up from the glass with a display of cedar dust giving way to black cherries, mixed with notes of sage, crushed stone and hints of smoked meats. The textures are silky and pliant in feel, with a combination of juicy acids and ripe red fruits that create a high-energy and fully satisfying impression. It’s structured yet remarkably fresh and balanced, tapering off to sweet herbal notes, hints of tobacco and mocha. The only fault I can find is that it’s so easy to like already - but is that really a fault? Bravo. Enjoy this now for its primary intensity, or cellar for three to five years for a softer and broader expression.
