Bruno Clair’s large parcel of very old vines (about half date to 1912) delivers a wine of exceptional concentration. With a bit of age in the bottle, the 2009 vintage today is showing smoky, lush, black plum fruit with accents of leather, smoke and earth. The texture is impressively open, with a silky feel, yet there is no lack of tension and structure. To open this now is not an error, but neither would be cellaring it for another 20 years: drinking now but nothing but upside to more age.

The 2009 Chambertin-Clos de Beze literally explodes on the palate with an array of dark fruit, roses, sweet spices and minerals. This is a deep, beautifully articulated Beze with tons of structure and a magical weightlessness that is hard to describe with mere words. Simply put, this is a great wine in the making. A spicy, pure and admirably refined nose offers up notes of cool, layered and an impressively broad mix of wild red berries, stone and underbrush hints. The textured and almost painfully intense broad-shouldered flavors possess deep reserves of tannin-buffering dry extract as well as the same extraordinary finishing depth that the nose hints at. A knock-out but this is expressly built to age and the flavors and tannic spine are so tightly wound that it's pointless to buy this if you do not intend to age it for at least 10 to 12 years first.

Medium red, a bit lighter than the Clos Saint-Jacques. Captivating raspberry, spice and wild herb aromas are accented by blood orange and an exotic whiff of white fruits. Wonderfully bright and intense for 2009, showing an almost saline impression of extract to the bitter cherry and mineral flavors. Much more imploded than it was from barrel, this very long, strongly mineral but slightly disjointed grand cru calls for eight to ten years of cellaring.
