A brooding but notably ripe nose of dark cherry and pungent earth aromas slides gracefully into strikingly rich and tautly muscular big-bodied flavors that possess praiseworthy concentration. There is plenty of underlying tension and energy to the mouth coating and very serious finish that displays only a touch of rusticity. This overtly robust effort will, as is usually the case, require plenty of bottle age.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Nuits Saint Georges Clos des Forets St Georges 2011 is closed on the nose compared to the Clos de l’Arlot: rather subdued with blackberry and sous-bois notes trying to get out from the glass with which they seem tethered. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins, lithe red cherries and strawberry fruit with a taut and linear, quite spicy finish that lingers nicely. Very fine – but it needs another 3-4 years in bottle.

The 2011 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Forêts Saint Georges 1 er Cru has a refined but focused bouquet with finely tuned dark cherry, strawberry and subtle Earl Grey scents that gain vigour with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, quite supple in the mouth with a gentle grip - raspberry coulis, strawberry and a touch of cedar towards the finish, satisfyingly long with impressive delineation. Very fine. Tasted at Flint Wines Burgundy 2011 tasting.

Winery Notes

With its well-defined character, this wine perfectly illustrates the identity of the Nuits Saint Georges vineyard. Complex aromas of blackcurrant mingled with spicy blackberry are revealed on the nose with, depending on the vintage, darker notes of liquorice, leather and blood orange. The well-built mouth affirms itself with density and strength around a tight structure with rich, well-wrapped tannins. It becomes increasingly seductive over time, which comes from the elegance, intensity and purity of the fruit.
