93-95 The 2016 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Clos des Forêts St-Georges includes 50% whole cluster with 50% new oak. This has the most precise bouquet from Domaine de l’Arlot this year: exquisite scents of wild strawberry, cranberry, wild hedgerow and just a hint of graphite. It feels tightly wound at first but gathers pace with aeration in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. This feels crisp and linear, and there’s good depth of flavor as this gently grips the mouth. Red fruit dovetail into black toward the graphite-tinged finish, the persistence very long. There is palpable energy in situ that should see it age for two decades.

Soft, fleshy and complete on the palate with a combination of dark berry and blackcurrant leaf notes. Impressive concentration and fine purity here. A really classy Premier Cru Nuits-St-Georges which has a winning combination of ripeness, purity and balance. Harvested between 27 September and 2 October. Only 40% of normal volume, with yields down to just 9hl/ha.

The 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Forêts Saint Georges 1er Cru was cropped at 9 hl/ha due to the frost that year. This blend includes 40% whole cluster. This has quite a concentrated bouquet of red and black fruit, very perfumed and floral with crushed violets threatening to overwhelm the fruit! The palate is medium-bodied with a savoury entry, bold tannins and impressive weight leading to a gutsy, concentrated and almost ferrous finish that lingers in the mouth.

Here too the nose is overtly floral in character though relative to the Suchots the dark berry fruit aromas are much earthier and decidedly less spicy. The sleekly muscular, intense and broad-shouldered flavors possess outstanding mid-palate density and power before culminating in a robust, firmly structured and wonderfully complex finale. This is a classically styled Nuits that is definitely built-to-age and one that is definitely going to need it.

Winery Notes

With its well-defined character, this wine perfectly illustrates the identity of the Nuits Saint Georges vineyard. Complex aromas of blackcurrant mingled with spicy blackberry are revealed on the nose with, depending on the vintage, darker notes of liquorice, leather and blood orange. The well-built mouth affirms itself with density and strength around a tight structure with rich, well-wrapped tannins. It becomes increasingly seductive over time, which comes from the elegance, intensity and purity of the fruit.
