Offering up a deep bouquet of cassis, plums, dark chocolate and spices, the 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Forêts St Georges is medium to full-bodied, supple and enveloping, with a textural attack, melting tannins, ripe acids and a deep core of sapid fruit. The finish is impressively long and nicely defined. Deeper and fleshier than the more ethereal Clos d’Arlot, this will blossom with a little bottle age, but it’s sufficiently elegant and expressive to be approachable sooner.

The 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges Clos des Fôrets-Saint-Georges 1er Cru contains a little more amplitude than the 2016, fine mineralité and discrete floral scents, pressed rose petal especially. Good energy and precision. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, fleshy on the entry with a fine bead of acidity, very pure and poised with a discrete black pepper edge mixed with seaweed towards the finish. This is an excellent wine that may improve further with bottle age. Tasted at the Domaine de L'Arlot tasting at La Cabotte in London.

Refined, almost delicate in character, this is an elegant red Burgundy with dark berry fruit to the fore and leafy, floral notes on the nose. With some slightly drying tannins, this 2017 Clos des Forêts doesn’t carry the same concentration as the 2016 but will drink well for at least another five years. The harvest started on 5 September, finishing on 14 September.

Not surprisingly, the aromatic profile is quite similar to that of the Cuvée Hors Ligne. There is good size, weight and muscle to the solidly dense middle weight plus flavors that culminate in a markedly serious, mouthcoating and sneaky long if mildly edgy finish. This too is very clearly built to age but it's not overly austere; with that said, this is clearly going to require extended patience and in particular to round out the finish.

Winery Notes

With its well-defined character, this wine perfectly illustrates the identity of the Nuits Saint Georges vineyard. Complex aromas of blackcurrant mingled with spicy blackberry are revealed on the nose with, depending on the vintage, darker notes of liquorice, leather and blood orange. The well-built mouth affirms itself with density and strength around a tight structure with rich, well-wrapped tannins. It becomes increasingly seductive over time, which comes from the elegance, intensity and purity of the fruit.
