One of Beaune’s top Premier Crus, Clos des Mouches is named after the presence of bees, rather than ‘flies’. The Bichot plot is 0.75ha at 300m on marly limestone to the west of the vineyard. Picked on 3rd September, the wine reflects the warm vintage with a plush, tropical character on the palate combined with quite showy oak. There is fresh acidity to balance this weight, along with a flinty finish. Ready to drink now.

Of all the white wine grape varietals, surely the one that has spread the furthest and is most widely appreciated is Chardonnay. This green-skinned grape is now grown all over the Old and New Worlds, from New Zealand to the Americas, from England to Chile, and is one of the first varietals people think of when considering white wine grapes. The 2016 Beaune 1Er Cru Clos des Mouches was picked on 28 September and matured in 30% new oak for 15 months. There is a pleasant touch of reduction on the nose that does not impede upon terroir expression: nicely defined with scent of grilled walnut and smoke. The palate is well balanced with a fresh entry, that slight reduction continuing but there is a welcome smear of clear honey toward the lightly spiced finish. Not bad at all.
