Starting with the 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reserve, this wine showed spectacularly on release, closed down for a few years, and has now emerged, at close to full maturity, and is straight-up fabulous. Out of the entire tasting, it remained my favorite. Giving up gorgeous blackberry, currants, garrigue, pepper and beef blood, it hits the palate with a massive, full-bodied texture that carries layers of sweet fruit, awesome concentration and blockbuster length. Tasting like the essence of both this estate and the terroir, it’s an incredible wine that I’m happy to taste/drink anytime. It will continue to evolve gracefully, but I see no reason to delay gratification.

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Offers aromas of freshly crushed plum and blackberry with a Port-like headiness, then pumps out dark berry fruit, bramble, licorice, tar and pain d'épices flavors before a flitter of game and garrigue on the finish. Dense and muscular, but also luxurious. Best from 2008 through 2030. 5,830 cases made, 1,000 cases imported. (Highly Recommended)

While not up to the best bottles of this I've had, the 2003 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Réservée was nevertheless brilliant, with classic Pégau complexity and depth. Saddle leather, Provençal herbs, plums, licorice, and meaty, gamey notes all make an appearance, and it's full-bodied on the palate, with a rounded, layered texture, nicely integrated tannins, and outstanding length. It’s fully mature but will evolve for another decade at a minimum.

92-94 Dark violet color. Rich, spicy and sweet on the nose, with cherry and blackberry fruit aromas complicated by exotic Asian spices, fresh meat and espresso. This is wonderfully thick, even viscous, but the overall impression is fresh, not tiring, with deep flavors of berries, cherry, dark plum, licorice, garrigue and coffee candy. Expands and puts on weight with aeration, finishing with fully buffered, round tannins. This packs 15.5% alcohol but betrays no heat.

Winery Notes

COLOR: Dark red with a purple body. NOSE: Black ripe fruits like morello cherries and raspberries, juniper berries, black pepper and garrigue. After several years ageing, the aromas will be characterised by plums, dried stone fruits, leaher, fur and sandalwood. MOUTH: Round, rich and powerful with soft tannins. With time, i twill involve into a more complex and spicy wine.
