Very concentrated and tightly structured but wonderfully elegant, thanks to the fineness of the tannins. Aromas of smoke, licorice and wet earth as well as a wealth of forest-berry fruit. In spite of all this, it feels lively on the medium- to full-bodied palate. Extremely long, compact finish. From organically grown grapes. Matured in a half-and-half mix of new oak barriques and once-used casks. Drink or hold.

The Mazis-Chambertin from Faiveley is a step above, with mineral-focused black and red fruit aromas touched with smoke and peppery spice. There is density and weight but the wine is not heavy; instead, there is a lovely balance between the lush fruit and the firm tannins and fresh acidity. To achieve this result, they had to green harvest about 30% of the potential yield in the vineyard. A portion of their 1.56 hectare holdings is also not in production due to replanting.

93-95 My inclination is in favor of the ethereal Latricières, but some readers may gravitate toward the denser, fleshier 2023 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru, a full-bodied, supple and layered wine evocative of smoky berries and plums mingled with exotic spices and orange zest.

93-95 The 2023 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is quite understated on the nose with brambly red fruit, briar and light earthy scents that emerge with time. It's subtle and very different from Roty's Mazis, which I tasted an hour earlier. The palate is medium-bodied and well balanced with crunchy red fruit, chalky tannins and a judicious touch of white pepper toward the finish. I suspect this is a pretty Mazis-Chambertin that will give most of its pleasure in its first decade.

91-94 Firm reduction completely dominates the fruit today. More interesting are the refined and generously proportioned medium-bodied flavors that flash both good power and a more subtle minerality on the balanced and equally austere finale that, like several wines in the range, would benefit from developing better depth.

This wine reveals a deep ruby red hue and intense notes of oak, spice and red fruits on the nose. The palate offers the same aromas and the nose with a harmonious combination of fruity and oaky notes. With its smooth tannins and long, lingering finish, this well-balanced wine is the epitome of elegance. Serve with: Steak in a mushroom sauce, game stew, glazed duck breast, roast saddle of lamb.
