Varietal

Chenin Blanc

Originating in France yet now grown in many parts of the New World, Chenin Blanc is one of the most versatile and highly regarded white wine grape varietals on earth. These green skinned grapes hold a relatively high acid content, and as such can be used for making still white wines of exceptional quality, as well as superb sparkling wines (such as the Crémant wines of the Loire Valley) and extremely aromatic dessert wines. Their natural transparency means that they are a fine grape for expressing their terroir in the bottle, and winemakers often experiment with this varietal to coax unusual and intense flavors from the grapes, such as allowing the development of noble rot on the fruit in order to make sweet and viscous wines of a unique character.

Region

Loire Valley

Within France, the one region most closely associated with fine white and rosé wines is surely the Loire Valley. With over eight controlled appellations, and a relatively large expanse of land covering this wide valley, the Loire Valley is an ideal location for wineries wishing to produce large quantities of excellent quality vines for their wine production. Indeed, this region has been associated with excellent white wines for over a thousand years, with it once being the favorite wine region for the crowned heads of England, France and beyond. Today, it produces a wide range of white wines, and several rosé and red varieties also. It is also widely celebrated for being home to some of France's most lively and fruity sparkling crémant wines, which more than match those produced in nearby Champagne.

Appellation

Vouvray/Touraine

Touraine is a French wine appellation in the heart of the Loire Valley, known for its diversity and value. It produces a wide range of wine styles, including crisp whites, light reds, fresh rosés, and elegant sparkling wines. The region’s cool climate and varied soils contribute to its distinctive character. White wines, especially those made from Sauvignon Blanc, are the appellation’s hallmark—zesty, aromatic, and citrus-driven, often with a stony or grassy edge. Red Touraine is typically made from Gamay, Cabernet Franc, or Pinot Noir, offering juicy red fruit and soft tannins. Rosés are dry and refreshing, and méthode traditionnelle sparkling wines are increasingly respected. Touraine’s wines are approachable, versatile, and food-friendly, making them ideal for everyday drinking and discovery. For wine lovers seeking a gateway into French terroir without the price tag of more famous regions, Touraine delivers quality and character with unmistakable Loire charm.

WS 95pts

Wine Spectator

Plump, with mango, date and green fig notes, but also brightly detailed, with persimmon, ginger powder, mineral and green tea notes. Mouthwatering acidity holds it all together and extends the lengthy finish. Shows a touch more bass than treble, but still a classic. Drink now through 2028. 675 cases made.

Wine Advocate

Full points for the bright and vivacious shimmering yellow-golden color of the 2005 Vouvray Le Mont Moelleux Première Trie! The wine is still discreet on the precise and coolish, floral and minerally scented nose where herbal aromas are indicated, whereas the fruit flavors are fresh and precise but still restrained if the wine is poured straight from the bottle instead if a decanter. This full-bodied, concentrated and highly elegant Le Mont is sweet, smooth and concentrated on the highly elegant palate; it is very precise and piquant in its fruit and mineral expression and reveals a remarkable finesse, tension and persistence in the powerful and structured finish, which is still somewhat dry in its firm minerality though. This Le Mont tastes significantly more dry than the corresponding Clos du Bourg (bottled in April 2006 with 78 grams per liter of residual sugar, whereas the Clos de Bourg has 81 grams per liter).

Vinous Media

The 2005 Moelleux 1ére Trie Le Mont is in a gorgeous place right now. Deeply pitched aromas of orange confit, burnt sugar, vanillin, spice and honey are so attractive. The 2005 is rich and viscous on the palate, but not at all heavy. Its balance is simply marvelous. Ideally, it is best enjoyed over the next few years.
