Smoky, toasty oak presents an appealing facade for this red today, with generous blackberry, black cherry and iron flavors right behind it. More vertical than horizontal, with excellent balance, depth and complexity. Reveals earth and medicinal herbs on the superlong aftertaste. Best from 2027 through 2048.

This is also wonderfully spicy with its very fresh aromas of black cherry, raspberry, exotic tea, hoisin and anise wisps. The mouthfeel of the broad-shouldered flavors is again highly seductive yet serious as the very firm finale is dusty and somewhat raspy where a touch of warmth eventually emerges. As noted, this is extremely firm and is going to need a very long snooze in a cool cellar before it reveals its full potential.

There is a lovely balance here between ripe cherry fruit, hints of violets, mineral, and earth, and a bit of smoke from the cask aging. The wine is not as exuberant as many 2019s, but with time, it should open gracefully. The grapes were completely destemmed and punched down twice daily; the cuvaison lasted nearly three weeks, followed by 21 months in cask. The overall effect is a bit reserved but concentrated and structured, with the ability to age.

Winery Notes

Intense ruby red with dark purple rim. Refined with subtle floral (violet) and slightly peppery notes. Flavorful, fruity, spiced, licorice and slightly mentholated notes. Sumptuous, dense and extremely elegant tannins on the finish.
