Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

The 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Julien Barrot is also beautiful. Based on 63% Grenache, 13% Mourvèdre, 11% Syrah, 7% Counoise, 5% Cinsault, and the rest Clairette Rose that was partially destemmed, its deeper ruby/plum hue is followed by terrific aromatics of ripe black cherries, sappy garrigue, licorice, and chalky minerality. It's not massive yet brings a beautiful sense of concentration and mid-palate depth, ripe, polished tannins, and just about flawless balance. A gorgeous 2022, it’s going to benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and cruise over the following decade or more.

Darker in character than the 2023 tasted side by side, the 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Julien Barrot opens with vivid licorice, forest strawberry, lavender, dried herbs and a flicker of violet. Mildly shaped by fine-grained tannins, the full-bodied 2022 needs at least three more years in bottle before starting to show its full potential. An uplifting, savory conclusion rounds it up.

Rated 91 - The 2022 Châteauneuf du Pape “Julien Barrot” bottling from Domaine la Barroche is made from several different parcels of old vines that the family owns, with the average age of vines fully seventy years. The wine is made from a blend of sixty percent grenache, nineteen percent mourvèdre, thirteen percent syrah and the remaining eight percent a mix of other Châteauneuf varieties (mostly cinsault). The wine is raised in a combination of cement, smaller casks and demimuids. The 2022 version tips the scales at a full fifteen percent alcohol and offers up scents of black raspberries, fruitcake, hung game, pepper, bonfire, dark soil tones and a topnote of garrigue. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, plush on the attack and nicely vibrant from the good acids, with a rock solid core of fruit, good soil undertow, firm, chewy tannins and good balance on the long, complex and gently warm finish. This is a big boy that needs time in the cellar to soften up its considerable tannins, but it will be a good example of the vintage. - John Gilman
