Long-term Pre-arrival Items
Long Term Pre-arrival Definition: Ordering wine directly through us from our supplier partners in Europe in advance of the item’s physical arrival in the US.
Long Term Pre-arrival sales ensure you’re getting the best possible price and that you have also secured the product before it hits the normal retail supply chain. The lead time for Pre-arrival goods is generally 4–8 months, sometimes longer based on supply chain and the logistics of transporting goods overseas. The expectation, from our team, is to communicate to the customer the location of their purchase every step of the way.
This product is offered as a full case purchase option, minimum order quantities may be applicable. When available, multiple case options will be presented. If you are purchasing a Pre-Arrival item you must order a solid case.
Rapid Ship
Items listed as "rapid ship" are in stock and available for immediate pickup or shipment. Those that do not have the "rapid ship" icon are housed with our supplier and must be transferred to our warehouse before they can be picked up or shipped. This requires 4-6 business days but usually occurs sooner. Some products will list both options of availability as there will be a certain number in stock, with the option to order additional bottles to be transferred from the supplier.

The 2017 Kavalieros is all unoaked Assyrtiko and comes in at 14% alcohol. Concentrated and powerful, this shows off pretty much everything. For all of that, I’d say this might be the most elegant of the Sigalas Assyrtikos this issue. The mid-palate is supported by fine structure. It’s ripe enough but tightly wound, very precise, graceful and focused. It seems impeccably balanced, yet it is hardly shy—it grips the palate on the finish and doesn’t let go. As Assyrtiko goes, this is a relatively stern example—dry and brooding a bit, intense but hiding its flavors, at least now. It needs some cellar time, badly, to become more expressive. Re-tasted the next day, it opened a little. It seemed far more elegant in the mid-palate but ever more powerful on the finish. It is simply gripping, fresh, lively and beautifully constructed. When I talked about some of the big and ripe 2017 7 Villages offerings this issue (some, not all, fit that profile), this is a good contrast, showing far more finesse and freshness while maintaining concentration. It’s okay to like more than one style when dealing with great Assyrtiko.

Assyrtiko wines are characterized by their citrus flavors, particularly lemon and grapefruit, along with notes of saline minerality and hints of herbs like thyme. They are typically bone-dry with a crisp acidity and a steely texture, making them refreshing and versatile for pairing with a variety of foods. What makes Assyrtiko unique is its resilience; it can withstand high temperatures and strong winds, conditions that are challenging for most grape varieties. The grape's ability to retain acidity even in intense heat contributes to the longevity and age-worthiness of Assyrtiko wines, which can develop richer flavors and complex aromas with time.

Today, Greek wines are just as varied, although far more refined and sophisticated than their ancient counterparts. The practice of enhancing Greek wines with aromatic substances never left the country, though, as can be seen in the popular Retsina wines, which use pine resin to provide their unique taste and aroma combinations. There is far more to Greek wine than merely Retsina, however, and the vast variety on offer is a testament to the expertise of Greek wineries making the most of the wonderful climate, terrain and grape varietals they work with.

Tropical fruit and sea salt aromas are followed by classic flavors of salt, slate and soft tropical fruit in this single-vineyard pour. The wine ends with a spicy, smoky finish. Refined but approachable.
Winery Notes
Situated in the small picturesque village of Imerovigli, the Kavalieros vineyard overlooks the dramatic Santorini caldera from one of the highest altitudes on the island. The first winery to produce a single vineyard Assyrtiko, Sigalas ages this wine in tank intensely stirring the lees over an impressively long 18-month period. The result is a concentrated, complex and powerful Assyrtiko with a unique lingering persistency on the finish.
