Riesling

Riesling grapes have been grown in and around central Europe for centuries, and over time, they became the lasting symbol of south Germany's ancient and proud wine culture. Whilst the reputation of German wines abroad has in the past been mixed, the Germans themselves take an enormous amount of pride in their wineries, and Riesling grapes have now spread around the globe, growing anywhere with the correct climate in which they can thrive. Riesling grape varietals generally require much cooler climatic conditions than many other white grapes, and they are generally considered to be a very 'terroir expressive' varietal, meaning that the features and characteristics of the terroir they are grown on comes across in the flavors and aromas in the bottle. It is this important feature which has allowed Riesling wines to be elevated into the category of 'fine' white wines, as the features of the top quality bottles are generally considered to be highly unique and offer much to interest wine enthusiasts.

Germany

As in many Old World countries, the rise of viticulture in Germany came about as a result of the Roman Empire, who saw the potential for vine cultivation in the vast flatlands around the base of the Rhine valley. Indeed, for over a thousand years, Germany's wine production levels were enormous, with much of the south of the country being used more or less exclusively for growing grapes. Over time, this diminished to make way for expanding cities and other types of industries, but Southern Germany remains very much an important wine region within Europe, with many beautifully balanced and flavorful German wines being prized by locals and international wine lovers alike. The hills around Baden-Baden and Mannheim are especially noteworthy, as these produce the high end of the characteristic semi-sweet white wines which couple so perfectly with German cheeses and pickled vegetables. However, all of Germany's wine producing regions have something special and unique to offer, and are a joy to explore and experience.

Pfalz

The beautiful German wine region of Pfalz is the second largest in the country, and a region recognized for its astonishing variety and the quality of its produce. With around 25,000 hectares of land in Pfalz under vine, the region produces an impressive amount of wine, considering the fact that the majority of wineries in the region are independent, small and traditionally run. The vineyards of Pfalz benefit enormously from their relatively warm, dry and sunny climate – exceedingly similar to that of nearby Alsace – and the high quality, mineral rich soils that typify the region. Although grapes have been cultivated in the Pfalz region since time immemorial, it was the Romans who first built up the wine region in the first century, introducing many grape varietals which can still be found growing there to this day.

This racy, light-bodied riesling has fabulous juiciness. I love the zesty pink grapefruit and blood orange flavors that make this such a joyful wine. Very long, expressive finish. A cuvee of wines from the Bohlig and Konigswingert sites that were wild-fermented. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

The 2024 Riesling Hommage à Luise is a Kabinett style that was picked on two elevated sites, one on limestone, one on sandstone. Lemon, crushed citrus and a touch of conifer play on the nose. More air brings the juiciest apple aroma. This was stopped at around 30 g/L of residual sugar and simply smiles at you with its tenderness and freshness. The 2024 is beautifully fresh-faced and cooling, with vivid brightness that makes it incredibly balanced. (Bone-dry)

A blend composed of Pinot Noir and native German varietals, this red is perfect for any table. Notes of blackberry, wild cherry, vanilla, and a touch of spice are present on both the nose and palette with silky tannins and the slightest hint of oak. Pair with dishes like assorted charcuterie or eggplant Parmigiana.
