The 2019 Condrieu La Doriane is another tremendous effort from this estate that does everything right. Reminding me slightly of the 2015 with its power and richness, it still has plenty of freshness in its apricot, ripe pineapple, honeyed marmalade, flowers, and cream aromas and flavors. Already complex and full-bodied, with good acidity and a fabulous finish, this is a quintessential expression of this cuvée and it’s hard to imagine how it would be any better. These always have the capacity to age, yet I find them most enjoyable with 6-12 months of bottle age and then over the following 3-5 years.

Varietal

Viognier

Although primarily associated with the Rhone region of France, the precise origins of the Viognier grape variety are unknown, and the subject of much debate. However, these fine and delicate green skinned grapes are an important varietal for many of France's most elegant white wines, and they are quickly beginning to spread around the New World, too, where wineries are discovering their unique qualities and unusual character. Viognier grapes are notoriously difficult to grow, due to the fact they are highly susceptible to mildew, but wineries persevere with them nonetheless, producing wines which are highly aromatic and have a great, fruit-forward character. Their delicate aroma suggests sweetness due to its flowery, sappy nature, but the wine itself generally very dry and crisp, and full of summery, light and refined qualities.

Region

Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Appellation

Condrieu

Condrieu, a prized appellation in France's Rhône Valley, is celebrated for its luscious Viognier wines. Its defining features stem from the terroir: steep slopes of granite soil by the Rhône River. Condrieu Viogniers boast intense aromas of white flowers, apricot, and peach, with a hint of spice, complemented by a full-bodied texture and refreshing acidity. Rigorous regulations ensure the quality and authenticity of these wines, reflecting the terroir's essence and winemakers' expertise. Condrieu serves as a global standard for exceptional Viognier, offering a luxurious tasting experience that invites wine enthusiasts to appreciate its unique character and the artistry behind each bottle.

Great freshness and vibrancy of fruit that cuts through the considerable oak on the nose. A rich and concentrated style, ripe and opulent. Oily on the palate, with a gently coating sweetness. Very intense with good balancing acidity, salinity and warming alcohol on the long finish with a flourish of oak spice. An intensely flamboyant, razzle-dazzle Condrieu.

Wine Advocate

Fermented and matured in new barrels, the 2019 Condrieu la Doriane nevertheless reveals effusive floral aromas on the nose, backed by notes of toast, lime and apricot. This medium to full-bodied effort shows exquisite balance and structure, finishing silky and long. It's one of the rare Condrieus that may be able to age well for a decade.

The flamboyant 2019 Condrieu La Doriane is on point. Expressive apricot, ripe peach, rose water, honeysuckle, melon, pineapple, vanilla and brioche are front and center. Full-bodied and concentrated, it transparently displays the characteristic 2019 ripeness yet maintains its balance. It closes with nuanced Bourbon vanilla tones on the lingering finish.
