Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

97-99 As always, the 2022 Côte Rôtie La Mouline is the most perfumed and exotic of the La Las and has a mammoth-sized bouquet of sweet red and black fruits, scorched earth, spring flowers, and graphite, with classy and perfectly integrated background oak. It's focused, tight, and more linear at the moment, but brings terrific mid-palate depth, ripe tannins, and serious length on the finish. It should gain breadth and weight over the course of its élevage.

94-96 Notes of iris, oak, ripe dark berries and spices intertwined with an oaky character preface the 2022 Cote Rotie La Mouline, a blend of 89% Syrah and 11% Viognier. Full-bodied, dense and suave, it's enveloping and concentrated. With a rich chassis of tannins and a muscular yet sappy structure, it concludes with a long, oaky and spicy finish. Compared to its counterparts, La Mouline is always more enveloping and charming when young; this vintage is no exception.

Medium-bodied and refreshing, the 2022 is shaping up to be a classic La Mouline with energy and finesse. Firmly structured and perfectly balanced, it finishes with excellent drive on the complex finish.

Finely spiced, very true to form in its tobacco leaf aromas. Particularly saline this year and detailed, not quite as lush as some 2022s, which is no bad thing. Exuberant and very much a classic expression, tannins are a touch dry and it's currently full of oak smoke on the finish. Not overly alcoholic, though the fruit is extremely ripe. From lieu-dit Côte Blonde. At the beginning of its 40 months in new French oak barriques.
