The 2022 Nerello Mascalese Arenaria takes its time in the glass. It is darkly floral and spiced with a smoldering blend of blackberries and grilled herbs offset by a tinge of tangerine. This impresses further with its combination of tart wild berries and zesty citrus tones elevated by juicy acidity over a stream of silken textures. Complex yet wildly energetic, the 2022 leaves the palate reeling as licorice comes together with black raspberry and cocoa over a bed of fine-grained tannins. The Arenaria is painfully young today yet full of potential, displaying incredible depth and refinement. In a word, spellbinding.
Nerello, an indigenous grape variety thriving on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, Italy, is a captivating and unique wine varietal deserving exploration. The two primary expressions, Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, contribute to the region's acclaimed Etna wines. Known for their versatility, Nerello grapes produce wines with vibrant acidity, moderate tannins, and an alluring spectrum of red fruit flavors, from cherries to raspberries. However, what sets Nerello apart is its ability to convey the distinctive volcanic terroir of Mount Etna. The vines' roots delve into mineral-rich volcanic soils, imparting a unique mineral character and a profound sense of place to the wines. Nerello wines, with their elegance and volcanic edge, provide a captivating journey into Sicily's winemaking heritage, showcasing the harmonious relationship between grape variety and terroir.
Country
Italy
There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.
Region
Sicily
The beautiful island of Sicily has been growing grapevines and producing wines for thousands of years, ever since the ancient Greeks first landed on its golden shores and noticed the island's true potential as a haven for quality grapes. Today, the island is one of Italy's primary wine regions, and even though over eighty percent of Sicily's grapevines are used for the production of sweet fortified wines, the remaining wineries making other wine styles are renowned around the world for their quality and character. Indeed, Sicilian wineries are famed for their ability to capture something of the sun-drenched region in their wines, and the vines they cultivate benefit enormously from the almost constant sunshine and the incredibly fertile volcanic soils which typify the island.

The 2022 Arenaria comes from vines grown at about 730 meters and is the most richly structured of the reds. Boasting noble tannins, a gravelly texture, and a chiseled feel, with notes of wild cherries, balsamic and minty herbs, pressed flowers, and a dark mineral tone, it’s compact and built to last for 15 years or more.
Winery Notes
90% Nerello Mascalese/10% other local varieties. "Arenaria", from the Arenaria contrada, was Acosta's first wine from outside Mt. Etna' volcanic terroir. It comes from a half-hectare parcel of 70-plus-year-old vines in Castiglione, just outside of Etna, on Mt. Portella at 700 meters. The north-facing vineyard is a mixed planting of various indigenous white and red varieties. The farming is organic. Nerello Mascalese is the main red, with Nerello Cappuccio, Alicante and Garnacha; the whites include Minnella, Catarratto, Grecanico and Inzolia. The terre bianche soils are sedimentary, from sandstone and marl (arenaria in Italian) with clay and quartz.
The bunches are hand-harvested, vinified as a mix of whole clusters and destemmed berries, co-fermented spontaneously with native yeasts and without sulfur or temperature control in concrete tank. Maceration lasts around 15 days. The wine is aged for 11 months in a combination of concrete tank and tonneau with minimal racking. It is bottled without fining or filtration and with a tiny amount of sulfur.
