Regularly described as being the grape varietal responsible for producing the world's most romantic wines, Pinot Noir has long been associated with elegance and a broad range of flavors The name means 'black pine' in French, and this is due to the fact that the fruit of this particular varietal is especially dark in color, and hangs in a conical shape, like that of a pine cone. Despite being grown today in almost every wine producing country, Pinot Noir is a notoriously difficult grape variety to cultivate. This is because it is especially susceptible to various forms of mold and mildew, and thrives best in steady, cooler climates. However, the quality of the fruit has ensured that wineries and vintners have persevered with the varietal, and new technologies and methods have overcome many of the problems it presents. Alongside this, the wide popularity and enthusiasm for this grape has ensured it will remain a firm favorite amongst wine drinkers for many years to come.

Oregon, Washington State and New York have all developed sophisticated and technologically advanced wine cultures of their own, and the output of U.S wineries is increasing each year as more and more people are converted to their produce.

The beautiful state of Oregon has, over the past few decades, become increasingly well known and respected for its wine industry, with several small but significant wineries within the state receiving world wide attention for the quality of their produce. Whilst the first vineyards within Oregon were planted in the 1840s, the state's wine industry didn't really take off until the 1960s, when several wine producers from California discovered that the cooler regions of the state were ideal for cultivating various fine grape varietals. Today, Oregon has over four hundred and fifty wineries in operation, the vast majority of which are used for the production of wines made from Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir varietal grapes, both of which thrive in the valleys and mountainsides which characterise the landscape of the state.

Ripe red berries on the nose, together with dried herbs and hints of citrus peel, dried flowers and savory nuances. Focused and balanced with medium body and lively acidity. Supple and textured in the mouth, with a delicate finish. Drink or hold.

There is an interesting hint of quinine to the beautifully layered nose of the essence of red pinot fruit, poached plum and violet nuances. The vibrant middle weight flavors are not quite as dense though they are notably finer while displaying lovely detail on the dusty, long and better-balanced finale. This lovely effort is going to need at least a few years of forbearance.

The 2022 Pinot Noir Le Puits Sec comes mainly from own-rooted Pommard vines planted in 1986. Matured for 21 months in 15% new French oak, it takes plenty of coaxing to reveal scents of pomegranate, spice and floral hints. The medium-bodied palate offers a core of red fruit structured by chalky tannins and juicy acidity, and it has a soft, spicy finish. 418 cases produced.

This Pinot Noir is crafted from grapes grown in the Le Puits Sec Vineyard, the estate vineyard of Evesham Wood. The vintage showcases the unique terroir of the Eola-Amity Hills AVA, reflecting the winery's commitment to organic and biodynamic farming practices. The wine presents an enticing bouquet of red fruits, with notes of cherry and raspberry at the forefront. On the palate, the wine reveals a complex flavor profile. Bright red fruit flavors are complemented by subtle earthy undertones and a hint of spice. This Pinot Noir boasts a medium body with well-integrated tannins, contributing to a smooth and elegant mouthfeel. The wine concludes with a lingering finish, showcasing its balance and depth. Evesham Wood's dedication to minimal intervention winemaking is evident in this vintage. The use of native yeasts and gentle handling techniques allows the true character of the Le Puits Sec vineyard to shine through in the final product.
