The 2023 Polígonos Paraje Altamira Malbec offers textbook examples of the region’s classically intense yet weightless, fragrant aromatic profile and builds upon it with time in the glass. The palate is sumptuous yet lifted, seamlessly transitioning to a rich, slow-moving finish that combines vertical lift with horizontal power while regenerating the floral perfume first found on the nose. While the Polígonos Gualtallary Malbec bottling may be the more immediately impressive, this could prove to be the more complete wine with time.

Varietal

Malbec

The purple Malbec variety grapes which now grow all over the Old and New Worlds had their origins in France, where they are one of the few grape varieties allowed to be used in the highly esteemed blended wines of Bordeaux. However, it is perhaps the New World Malbec wines which have attracted the most attention in recent years, as they thrive in hot southern climates in ways they cannot in their native country, where the damp conditions leave them highly vulnerable to rot. Malbec grapes are renowned for their high tannin content, resulting in full-bodied red wines packed with ripe, plummy flavors and held in their characteristically dark, garnet colored liquid. In many countries, Malbec is still used primarily as a varietal for blending, as it adds a great level of richness and density to other, lighter and thinner varietals. However, single variety Malbec wines have been greatly on the rise in recent years, with some fantastic results and big, juicy flavors marking them out as a great wine for matching with a wide range of foods.

James Suckling

Excellent depth and freshness, with tons of blackberries, violets, mussels and stone. Juicy, full-bodied and flavorful but very cool. Nothing sweet here. Tannins are fresh, silty and plentiful. Super focused and comfortably chewy at the end. Drink from 2025.

The 2023 Malbec Polígonos Paraje Altamira is sourced from the Uco Valley. After spending a winter in concrete vats, it presents medium aromatic intensity, featuring aromas of soft violet and ripe plum with a subtle herbal hint. It has a deliciously juicy flow, underscored by a pronounced chalky presence. This wine represents a modern take on Uco's Malbec.
