Regularly described as being the grape varietal responsible for producing the world's most romantic wines, Pinot Noir has long been associated with elegance and a broad range of flavors The name means 'black pine' in French, and this is due to the fact that the fruit of this particular varietal is especially dark in color, and hangs in a conical shape, like that of a pine cone. Despite being grown today in almost every wine producing country, Pinot Noir is a notoriously difficult grape variety to cultivate. This is because it is especially susceptible to various forms of mold and mildew, and thrives best in steady, cooler climates. The 2022 Pinot Noir Frei Road Vineyard is pure and expressive! It opens with explosive aromas of pomegranate, red plum, Earl Grey tea, rose petals and tobacco. The medium-bodied palate is silky and complex, offering layers of fruit, earth and spice. Its bright acidity is seamlessly integrated, and it has a very long, detailed finish.

Very woodsy on the nose, with truffles, tart red fruit and orange zest. Mouthwatering acidity with crunchy and juicy red fruit on the palate and a fresh, botanical finish. Medium-bodied. Drink or hold.

The 2022 Pinot Noir Frei Road Vineyard is another fine effort from Matt Courtney. It is also a wine that is going to require a bit of time in bottle to come together. Strong floral and savory notes open first. There's initially a bit of reduction here, which is something I do not associate with the Ferren Pinots. Medium in body, with terrific persistence and tons of character, the Frei Road certainly has a lot to offer, even if it is not at its most put-together today.

Delivers a fresh, racy streak of blood orange and raspberry coulis lined with savory, red tea and potpourri notes that shows persistence on the finish. Though this is more modest in scale of fruit (especially for the vintage), the freshness and precision here are of note. Drink now through 2029. 50 cases made.
