A polished, lightly chewy red with blackberries, blueberries and spice. Full-bodied with an intense, creamy palate. Yet, it spreads across the palate. Punchy. Give this time. A blend of petit verdot and merlot. Drink in 2022 and onwards.
The 2017 Estate Red Wine is more Cabernet Sauvignon dominated and spent 23 months in a mix of new and neutral French oak. It's a stunning effort that has classy cassis and black raspberry fruits as well as notes of cedar pencil, dried flowers, graphite, and dried earth. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and elegant on the palate, it's not a massive wine yet has terrific concentration, beautifully balanced tannins, and acidity, and a great finish. It will benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age and keep for 20 years or more.
The 2017 Estate Red Wine has a robust nose with juicy aromas and complex layers of red and black fruits that are dense and expressive with resinous purple flowers and integrated oak tones. Full-bodied, the wine initially has a firm tannic grip on the palate, leading to flavors of dark plum skin, dark dusty cherry and blackberry essence with a mineral tension and subtle flavors of bitter dark chocolate and walnuts. The finish is long and textured, guided by a tannic edge. This is delicious but will need two to three years in the cellar before enjoying. Your patience will be rewarded. The wine rested in French oak barrels for 23 months. Just over 25,000 bottles were made.
Bright medium ruby. Deep, pure aromas of black raspberry, licorice, menthol, nutty oak and graphite minerality. At once thick and vibrant on entry, then wonderfully broad, pliant and sweet in the middle palate, with perfectly integrated acidity energizing the broad flavors of dark berries, violet, licorice and minerals. Sweeter than the Figlia, this beautifully balanced, penetrating wine finishes long and pure, with nicely buffered tannins. And not at all austere even today.
Built for the cellar, this red is tightly wound right now but the promise is there, with deeply structured blackberry, cedar and dusky spice flavors that build tension toward firm tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2022 through 2030. 2,099 cases made.
This wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Merlot. The aromas are more brooding than other releases from this family, with notes of cedar box, cherry, barrels spice and scorched earth. The palate brings no shortage of fruit intensity, along with firm tannins and bright acidity. As with every release from Figgins, this is one for the cellar. Best from 2028–2033. (Cellar Selection)
Winery Notes
It's hard to believe this is our 10th release of our flagship wine! 2017 was a fantastic vintage in the Walla Walla Valley and this wine shows it in spades. Dark to the rim, with signature aromatic notes of ripe red and blue fruits, tanned leather, black olive, and lilac. The nose simply makes me smile; it is so distinctly FIGGINS! On the palate, if I had to describe the wine in one word it would be precision. The way the sweet fruit and dramatic length are braced by lively acidity and tannins aligns so perfectly that the wine is, quite simply, delicious.
The fruit is all from Figgins Estate Vineyard, which is planted to several clones each of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Merlot. Aged 20 months in French oak: 60% new, 40% second-fill.
