Varietal

Syrah

Known as Syrah in most countries around the world, and Shiraz in Australia and certain other regions of the New World, this grape varietal has proven over the centuries to be one of the most powerful and flavorful red wine grapes there is. It is now one of the planet's most widely grown grapes, and is a favorite with wineries as a result of its robustness and versatility. It isn't easy to identify many characteristics of this particular varietal, due to the fact that it is highly versatile and shows significant differences in flavor and character depending on the terroir it is grown in, and the climatic conditions of the region. However, Syrah is most widely associated with full bodied, strong and loud red wines, packed full of fruity and spicy flavors, held in a beautifully deep red liquid.

Region

Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Appellation

Cote Rotie

Côte-Rôtie, an esteemed appellation in the Northern Rhône Valley of France, stands as a beacon of Syrah excellence. What makes Côte-Rôtie unique is its dramatic topography, where steep terraced vineyards cling to the slopes of the Rhône River. The region's continental climate, combined with granite soils and ample sun exposure, contributes to the exceptional ripening of Syrah grapes, resulting in wines of unparalleled aromatic complexity and structure. Côte-Rôtie wines are characterized by their signature flavors of dark fruits, violets, and a distinctive smokiness. The appellation allows the co-fermentation of Syrah with a small percentage of Viognier, adding floral and aromatic dimensions to the wines. Producers like Guigal and Jamet exemplify Côte-Rôtie's commitment to tradition, crafting wines that showcase the synergy between terroir and grape variety. Exploring Côte-Rôtie offers a profound encounter with the pinnacle of Syrah craftsmanship, where the Rhône's hillsides give birth to wines of sublime beauty and complexity.

WS 93pts

Wine Spectator

A fresh, juicy blast of blackberry and açaí is held tightly in check with firm tannins and grainy graphite mineral elements. Offers impressive range and vibrancy. The clean finish wafts with alder smoke. Precise and pedigreed. Best from 2027 through 2038. 500 cases made, 200 cases imported.

Vinous Media

Vinified with roughly 70% whole clusters from the Northern sector, the 2023 Côte-Rôtie Le Gallet Blanc greets with soft-toned violets, stemmy tones, orange rind and red plum. Midweight carrying real substance and structured through ripe tannins, the 2023 is best kept for two more years in a cool cellar.

JD 92pts

Jeb Dunnuck

Red and black fruits, pepper, sappy herbs, and some game all emerge from the 2023 Côte Rôtie Le Gallet Blanc, a charming, textured, balanced Côte Rôtie. It's medium-bodied on the palate, with nicely integrated tannins, good overall balance, and outstanding length. It's drinking beautifully today, yet should cruise for 10-15 years or so. Drink 2026-2041.

Winery Notes

100% Syrah from Ampuis and Saint-Cyr, with an “emphasis on the schist areas from the Brune up towards Verenay” (Livingstone-Learmonth, Wines of the Northern Rhône). Eighty-eight percent whole cluster, macerated for twelve days in stainless steel and wood vats. Aged eighteen months in twenty percent new, eighty percent two- to four-year-old oak barrels.
