Irancy

Irancy is a lesser-known appellation in Burgundy, France, located near Chablis in the Yonne department. This small appellation is recognized for producing red wines primarily from Pinot Noir, though winemakers are allowed to blend in up to 10% of César, a rare, ancient grape variety native to the region. The cool climate of Irancy, influenced by its northern latitude, gives the wines vibrant acidity, fine tannins, and a distinct freshness. Irancy wines are typically medium-bodied with flavors of red and black fruits such as cherry, raspberry, and blackberry, often with earthy, spicy notes and a subtle minerality. These wines have excellent aging potential and develop more complex flavors over time. Unlike many other Burgundian reds, Irancy offers excellent value for money, making it an appealing option for wine enthusiasts seeking authentic Burgundy without the high price tag.

Thierry Richoux is considered the best producer of Irancy, and has now been joined by sons Gabin and Félix. This is a spectacular example of the potential for Pinot Noir in Irancy. The palate is chock-full of vibrant, sweet, red berry fruit with a hint of mushroom and forest floor in the background. Brimming with purity, freshness and concentration. In a blind tasting this could easily be a youthful example (say 2022) from a top site in the Côte d'Or. But it's from Kimmeridgian clay in the cool climate of the Yonne, aged for 12 months in stainless steel tanks and 14 months in oak barrels. Joyous Pinot Noir and remarkable value for money, with plenty of stuffing for further ageing. Organic.

Just bottled, Richoux's 2019 Irancy is brilliant, bursting with aromas of raspberries and cherries mingled with rose petals, spices and sweet loamy soil. Medium-bodied, supple and seamless, its melting structuring tannins are entirely concealed in an ample core of succulent, perfumed fruit.

The 2019 Irancy conveys a sense of joy on the nose, where vivid red cherries intermix with raspberry preserve, rose petal and light blueberry scents. The oak is very well assimilated. The palate is silky-smooth, almost satiny in texture, framing the crisp red berries, brown spices and black truffle aromas. It fans out wonderfully on the finish, completing a competent and very delicious Irancy that should give 10 years of drinking pleasure.
