The 2020 may have been considerably more concentrated than this vintage, and yet there is something more mellifluous, intuitive of feel and graceful to this 2021. A salty lead of preserved lemons, quince, tangerines and stone fruit. Incisive mineral precision and wet pebble complexity. This would make a worthy replacement for a top Chablis. Volcanic and alive. Scored on drinkability quotient. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.

As historically one of the most important regions in the world regarding trade and experimentation, it comes as no surprise to discover that Veneto has always been a well respected and innovative wine region. This area of north-easterly area of Italy benefits greatly from a continental climate tempered by the Alps, and plenty of influence from the Germanic countries it is near to. Veneto is most commonly associated with beautifully elegant white wines, such as those of Soave, and has over ninety thousand hectares under vine. Impressively, within that area, over a third of the vineyards in the Veneto region have been granted official AOC status, and many of the sub-regions and appellations of Veneto have gone on to be world-famous in regards to quality. One such example is Valpolicella, where some of Italy's finest and most complex red wines are produced.

The 2021 Soave Classico Contrada Salvarenza Vecchie Vigne displays a deep golden color, wafting up with notes of crushed almond, stone dust and Asian pear. It floods the palate with rich, textural waves of ripe, mineral-tinged orchard fruits, complemented by minty herbal tones and spice. Its acidity plays a supporting role, providing an unexpected freshness through the long and tension-filled finale. Hints of peach and inner florals fade. The fruit here is bright, but patience will be required.

Winery Notes

Salvarenza is a tiny sub-plot of the La Frosca Cru vineyard, blessed with 80 year old vines. The grapes are hand harvested and then temperature-control fermented in oak cask of 228 liters. Malolactic fermentation and aging are also in oak: the wine rests on its lees for nine month before bottling. Aged six months in bottle prior to release.
