However, the historic wineries which typify this region use a relatively wide variety of grapes, including Dolcetto and Barbera for their red wines, which are typically aged and have a delightful velvety character. Piedmont isn't all about beautifully complex red wines, though, as it is also famed for high quality, elegant sparkling wines, notably the Asti wines made with the white Moscato grape. I can't get enough Freisa, so I'm always happy to visit those producers who still make wine from this often forgotten grape. The Mascarello family's 2016 Langhe Freisa Toetto is made from just half a hectare of vines in Castiglione Falletto. Part of this site has now been replanted to Nebbiolo, and that means that only 3,000 to 4,000 bottles of Friesa are produced each year. Great care is taken in winemaking. Delicate pump-overs are done instead of punch-downs. The results are fresh, vibrant and teaming with wild berry flavors. The finish adds spicy sensations and fresh acidity that keeps the persistence long. What the wine lacks in complexity, it offers in terms of ease in drinking.

The 2016 Giuseppe Mascarello & Figlio Freisa Langhe Toetto is still very young and austere, and unless one has acquired a taste for young Freisas, probably tough going right now, but it showed very pure strawberry aromas and flavors nicely framed by mineral nuances and citrusy acidity that speak of a long, healthy life ahead. I have no doubt it will prove a splendid drink about five to eight years down the road.

Colour: Deep ruby-red. Nose: Varietal, spicy. Taste: Dry, characteristic, good body with a lot of tannins.
