There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. The 2022 L'Alberello is from a single vineyard of Cabernet Franc and was raised in 50% new French oak (only Taransaud) for 18 months, but it really incorporates it well. The wine pours a youthful red/magenta hue, while the nose opens to gorgeous aromas of blackcurrants, pine sap, crushed Mediterranean herbs, and pressed flowers. Full-bodied, it fills the palate with more noble structured tannins, though never drying, with its more gravelly earth notes lasting long on the palate. It demands time in bottle before enjoying over the coming three decades. Hide a few bottles of this away. Drink 2027-2050.

The Grattamacco 2022 L'Alberello is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Cabernet Franc. It shows a ripe, generous profile with sweet fruit flavors of cooked cherry and blackcurrant. Medium- to full-bodied, the wine offers a creamy lactic note on the finish, adding roundness to its otherwise firm structure. Fermented in stainless steel and matured in French barrique, this vintage reflects the estate’s focus on alberello-trained vines. The 2022 vintage will be remembered for its strong tannic backbone, clearly felt in this wine. This is a release of 12,000 bottles.

Its structure is complex and the tannins wonderfully ripe and silky. Notes of blackcurrant, blackberries. Leather and coffee are dominant. Eclectic and full of character on the palate.
